In Chikankari, Murri is a delicate, knotted stitch that creates a beautifully raised, textured effect on the surface of the fabric. Resembling a tiny grain of rice or a microscopic teardrop, it is closely related to a traditional French knot but has a slightly more elongated, pear-like shape. Artisans typically use this stitch to add rich, three-dimensional detailing to the centers of blooming flowers or to densely fill in intricate motifs. Because it requires the thread to be meticulously looped and pulled tight with exact tension, Murri is one of the more time-consuming and challenging stitches to execute, giving the finished embroidery an exceptionally premium, embossed feel.
